Tony Shaver said that his team that College of Charleston played at an extremely high level to beat his William and Mary team. College of Charleston was well prepared defensively. They also hit some tough shots, which did not hurt. The Tribe let Riller get off early. Game over.
Northeastern and UNCW had played two overtime games during the regular season. Not this time. Northeastern won their ninth in a row 79-52. It was their third straight 20 plus point win. UNCW lacked the energy they displayed in their upset of Hofstra. That semi-final game was over quickly.
It is down to the top two seeds for the CAA automatic bid. College of Charleston easily beat Northeastern at home 82-66. They won the rematch in Boston too, 69-64. Bill Coen has done his usual terrific job. Northeastern has improved a ton since the season began. On the other bench, College of Charleston also has an excellent coach. Earl Grant grew up in North Charleston. He remembers when school was let out early so that they could all watch C of C play in the NCAA tournament. Grant has five starters who have a ton of experience playing with each other. College of Charleston has been a notch better than Northeastern throughout conference play. In spite of Northeastern’s terrific play, that gap has not lessened. John Kresse will be smiling tonight.
