As expected Drexel had a tough go of it, coming off a big win vs experienced well coached Mercer. The challenge drops today, for sure, but does that equate to a win?
Drake made a home run hire in Nico Medved (see our archives) to resurrect a long struggling program. Medved worked for the great Jim Molinari and then was an assistant to one of the best, Tim Miles. Similarly to Coach Spiker, he has great pedigree. In his first head coaching stint, he very quickly turned Furman, long a doormat of the Southern Conference, into a winner. He will likely have a big job some day. It has not taken him long to elevate Drake’s level of play. They began this tournament by upsetting Wake Forest and then rallied to lose a close one to Colorado, quite the start to the Medved era.
On the surface, it seems they should handle Drexel, however, the consolation games of tournaments are often very psychological. Drake has put out 2 home run efforts and could be a bit discouraged after the big upset and coming close to another. Drexel should be ready for best after yesterdays blow out. Drake for sure is a small favorite (Vegas shows Drake as a 2 point favorite) but I think Drexel will be more interested.
