Drexel continues their Connecticut tour with a quick 45 minute ride from Mohegan Sun to battle the king of Connecticut Division I Basketball, The University of Connecticut. Obviously, UConn has plenty of positive history… yeah, winning 4 national championships is sort of good. They even won one with Kevin Ollie. However, Husky fans could hardly wait to get rid of him.
The fans not only got their wish, saying goodbye to Ollie, but they also got their primo choice for head coach. Yes, the UConn fans are super excited as Dan Hurley arrives fresh off his mega success at Rhode Island. Improvements have been made, however, UConn remains a bit of a work in progress. Hurley does not have the guards to play the 1 in 4 out offense that he ran at Rhode Island. Their half court offense has been shaky at best this year. They are prone to taking bad shots. Presently most of their offense comes from their defense.
If your last name is Hurley, you had better defend and indeed UConn has made strides defensively. A mandatory aside, if you are a basketball fan you must read, The Miracle at St Anthony’s. Dan’s dad is very special.
UConn has battled injuries the last couple of years. Hurley has a healthy roster, so improvement was happening with or without. If I am entirely honest, the Huskies have been a bit disappointing. Sure there is the win over dreaded Syracuse, but they have lost all other games where they have stepped up in class. Iowa buried them on a neutral court. Also on a neutral court Florida State ran out to a comfortable lead and were never really threatened by the Huskies. However, it was the home loss to Arizona that is most disappointing. They were playing a very young Arizona team in what felt like a 9 am game for the west coast visitors. Hurley’s squad made it easy for them by taking bad shot after bad shot. Those shots did not fall. UConn has held serve in all other contests, but when you are double digit favorites at home every game, then you should. Yes, like many big name schools, UConn has not played a road game yet.
Drexel comes to Storrs off probably their best game of the year. Unfortunately, they are catching UConn off a sleepy effort versus Manhattan. Hurley was not pleased with his team. I would expect a much more focused UConn tonight. When Drexel went to Rutgers although it was early in the season for a developing Drexel team, they were athletically overwhelmed. UConn has better athletes than Rutgers does. That is not close. This could be ugly.
