Drexel vs Coppin St – Preview

This is without a doubt the best cover of the Beatles classic. Few can match Ray Charles. He captures the yearning that the vocal needs, that few could ever convey. Backed by the one and only Count Basie makes this, well, epic.
Local legend, Juan Dixon is in his fifth season at Coppin St. The last two seasons have seen a marked improvement. This year began with a blowout loss at the Ramblers of Loyola Chicago. The following night, they hung tough for a long time at Depaul. Two nights later they were in Trenton, playing Rider even tougher before losing 81-69. The following night a blowout loss to UConn.. Just two nights later was their best effort as they took UNC Greensboro to the wire, losing 55-48. Another two nights later, they finally played at home and blew out a decent Loyola Maryland squad, 71-49.  Then they played four more games in the next ten days which were all close losses, most impressively losing 65-62 to an excellent Cleveland State bunch. No worries, they have played four more times since then.
They played their last game against local rival Towson, losing 89-75. They were without their terrific starting point guard, Juco transfer, Jesse Zarzuela.  Coppin returned one starter this year but Dixon has some talent to work with. They will push the pace at all times. He has done an excellent job with this group of newcomers.
Drexel went to Texas to take their biannual southwest beating. However, Drexel fans should be happy that this team is approaching what Bruiser’s teams played to, not close to Bruisers best, but it is progress. Unfortunately, the Colonial is loaded this year. Drexel has been good about beating teams they should. Coppin fits the bill.
Drexel should revel in the up-tempo game that Coppin brings. However, I have watched Coppin a couple of times and they do have enough talent to make things tough. They do need Zarzuela back as he is the guy that drives the quick pace. He is also an excellent outside shooter. Without him, this should be easy for Drexel. With Zarzuela, well, as mentioned above, Coppin has given teams better than Drexel fits. Still, Drexel will enjoy not looking at an Abilene Christian type defense. Coppin’s D will seem like a walk in the park.
