I talked at length in their first go round, how much more talented I felt William and Mary is this season. So how could such a talented, well coached team lose five in a row since the last meeting?
Game one was a riveting triple overtime loss to Hofstra. On short rest and facing a talented Northeastern team, The Tribe cracked and lost game two, 90-70. Paul Rowley sustained a concussion in practice. He is a former starter, glue player, who by the way is a second year law student having graduated magna cum laude in just three years with a double major in finance and computer science. He is an excellent defender and obviously a guy who will do the right thing on the court. For a team that is as young as William and Mary, he is far more important than his numbers would indicate.
He will return this week. Drexel had better hope it is not tonight. He missed the Elon game and with much improved back up point guard Thornton Scott injuring his ankle early on, they lost the third game of the streak, a game they were a big favorite to win. With both players out, they played poorly again getting down 17 to an average UNCW team in game four. Finally, they showed some fight in hanging at College of Charleston til the end. Scott will not be back tonight.
Drexel has fared better since these two teams last met, winning 3 of 5, including an unlikely win at College of Charleston, but their lack of talent and depth makes them a shaky proposition at all times. The minutes are piling up for the starters and they need Lee to return as superb freshman point guard Wynter needs his minutes reduced for them to have any chance in conference tournament.
William and Mary has lost 5 in a row. I would expect with or without Rowley, they would be all in tonight. They smashed Drexel without pro prospect Pierce playing a single minute in the first meeting. Drexel was down 13 with just over two minutes to go at Delaware. I would expect something similar against a superior William and Mary team whose inconsistent play is more due to youth and injury but whose best game could beat anyone in conference. I would expect their best tonight.
