It has been a strange start to the season for Elon. Matt Matheny is in his ninth year. He has guided the team up the conference ranks. The teams power rating, by my numbers has improved every year. They have five experienced starters back from last year. They have a new arena being built. This figures to be their year. Thus far, it is not the case.
A blow out loss at Duke was a bit surprising but not entirely unexpected. They then lost to a good Furman team in Greenville. Here is where it gets a bit strange.
They needed triple OT to beat an inexperienced Florida International squad. They then blew a 20 point lead at Wisconsin – Milwaukee. Then they won a war at home versus a good Radford team. It was their seventh game in thirteen days, so that wasn’t anything to be worried about. However, at home they beat a bad South Florida team in OT and a St Peter’s team that is down this year, in double OT. The Phoenix then got blasted by their local rival UNC Greenesboro. It got a bit better when they beat a struggling BU team on the road, but a blow out loss at Canisius followed. It’s bad news for Drexel.
Elon played their best game this year by running out to a seventeen point lead at Indiana State and hanging on for the win. They have had eight days off. They should be very ready for the conference opener.
It is hard to get a handle on Drexel. Injuries have made it difficult for them to find consistency. When healthy, I expect Drexel to be a tough out in a much weak Colonial. Last year Elon swept the season series, including a 93-73 romp at home. Obviously both teams will be all in for the first conference game. In their last game, Elon finally played to their ability. I would expect an even better effort today. Doubt Drexel is good enough to handle that.
