Towson was expected to be a contender in the Colonial. With a close loss at Old Dominion and wins over UPenn, Georgia Southern and La Salle in out of conference play, Towson seemed like they were a cinch for top 2 in the league. Yet they come to Philly with a 6-6 record in the Colonial, and coming off a bad loss to last place James Madison.
Drexel also had high hopes (although lower expectations) but a myriad of injuries led to an inconsistent out of conference performance and a just plain bad start in CAA play. Then they finally got healthy. When they got some reps playing with each other, the result has been four straight wins. They are returning home off their best half of basketball this season, shutting down William and Mary, the best offensive team in the conference.
The first time these two met was a total mismatch. Drexel began the game hitting four straight shots and led 8-0. Towson quickly turned the tables closed the half on a 13-0 run to hold a 49-33 lead. Drexel struggled to stay in front of Towson’s guards which led to a 30-37 night for the Tigers at the free throw line. The final was 90-68.
Drexel has caught many of their opponents at the right time. This time they do not. Towson has been erratic in conference. Off a bad loss, they should come to the DAC with fire in their eyes. Sure, Drexel shut down William and Mary, but Shaver’s bunch has been wildly inconsistent themselves. Drexel focused on stopping Matt Lewis in the rematch with JMU, yet he still had an efficient 26. Super focused Towson should once again, have similar success.
