UNCW arrived in Philly in poor form. The once proud program made a mistake when they hired from the Roy Williams tree. Roy’s teams have never played with much intelligence. C.B. McGrath is honoring that Roy tradition. UNCW pre conference had one bright spot, a shocking win over Florida International. Unfortunately that is it.
To make matters worse at the beach, after their loss at Vanderbilt, Sophomore point guard Kai Toews quit the team. He returned to his home, Japan to pursue a pro career. After an incredible freshman year, Toews had struggled a bit this season. He did not make the freshman to sophomore jump that I had expected. Still, his loss hurts a team that has struggled.
One might have expected an improved effort in their first conference game, however Delaware jumped out to a 14 point half time lead and coasted to an 82-68 win over UNCW. Delaware hit 12-23 threes but that is not unexpected given the terrific offense run by Inglesby and the lack of defense by UNCW. Delaware led by 27 in the 2nd half. It does not help that UNCW is dinged up a bit. They dressed only 9 for the Delaware game.
I watched the entire Drexel loss to College of Charleston. I am impressed by the talent Drexel has assembled. They also ran good offense but the execution and basketball choices were often lacking. Their defense was also a bit lacking. C of C did shoot very well, but they took almost all good shots. Still, I think this Drexel team has a big upside. Talent wise they have the edge tonight. They should have little trouble getting what they want on offense. Indeed, Maybe this time, they will win.
